THE FAMILY SHORTLIST · UPDATED OCTOBER 25, 2026
How to choose the best family SUV for your life.
Start with the people and things you carry. Then compare the vehicles that can make your everyday trips easier.
The best family SUV is the one that fits your passenger count, cargo needs, budget and driving routine. A three-row SUV may be a useful starting point if you often carry more than five people, but the third row alone does not tell you whether a vehicle works for your family.
The article that started the conversation
Autoblog’s “Best Family SUVs for 2027” selects the 2027 Kia Telluride as its winner, ahead of runners-up Hyundai Palisade and Toyota Grand Highlander. That editorial ranking offers a starting point for research. Use it alongside manufacturer information and an in-person evaluation.

Build a shortlist around your priorities
| Vehicle to research | What to evaluate on your visit |
|---|---|
| Kia Telluride | Seating configuration, third-row access, gas versus hybrid choice, and equipment on the exact trim. |
| Hyundai Palisade | Seat comfort, cabin layout, cargo usability and a comparable out-the-door quote. |
| Toyota Grand Highlander | Cargo fit, powertrain choices, family seating needs and local availability. |
This is a shopping checklist, not a specification comparison or a claim that Fayetteville Kia stocks every model listed. Compare the same model year and similarly equipped vehicles before deciding.
Five checks that matter more than a headline
1. Test every seat you plan to use.
Have your usual passengers sit in the second and third rows. Check headroom, knee room and access. If you use child restraints, bring them and follow both the vehicle and restraint instructions when checking fit. Do not assume that three seats across will fit just because an SUV is wide.
2. Keep the third row upright for the cargo test.
A maximum cargo figure usually describes a different seating arrangement than a full family trip. Load your stroller, sports gear or typical luggage with all the seats you need still in use. Try the liftgate and loading height yourself.
3. Drive your actual kind of route.
Test visibility, parking, highway merging and ride comfort. Check how easily you can adjust climate controls and use navigation while parked. Ask the team to explain driver-assistance systems and their limitations; these features do not replace attentive driving.
4. Compare total cost, not only a monthly payment.
Request an itemized out-the-door price. Consider taxes, fees, insurance, fuel, maintenance, financing terms and any optional products. If you compare a gas SUV with a hybrid, use your annual mileage and the actual price difference rather than assuming a hybrid will always cost less overall.
5. Verify the exact vehicle.
Model-year changes, trim names and optional packages can make two listings look more similar than they are. Confirm the VIN, seating layout, equipment and availability before traveling.
Why put the Telluride on your list?
Kia’s 2027 Telluride information lists seating for up to eight depending on configuration and an available hybrid model. Begin with the layout your household needs, then decide which trim offers the features you will use. Review Kia’s current model information.
